August 29, 2008So last week when I was up on the roof, watering the plants in the skybar, I noticed what looked like a branch moving around under the stream of water coming out of the hose. Upon closer inspection I saw the scariest bug I have ever seen in my life. It had a face and bangs! It was about six inches long and its head started turning and watching my every move. I finished up and got out of there quick. After talking about it with a couple of people I was told it was a Praying Mantis. I googled it and YUP, there is a Praying Mantis in the skybar. I did a little research and the most interesting fact I found out about these little alien freaks is that after the females mate with the males, she bites their head off! Mmmmm? Don't know what purpose that serves, but hell whatever floats your boat. Another fact I found out is that they are really good for gardens and kill all sorts of undesirable bugs. So I decided not to call in the national guard and let her stay, so long as she didn't mess with me. These are some pictures I found on google that helped me identify the cannablistic serial killer: So I was arriving home from work yesterday, and this little freak was sitting on the windowsill directly outside my loft. WTF? What does she want from me? What if she is in love and tries to bite my head off? Or perhaps this is another one? The one I saw on the roof was green and this one was more beige. BUT I think they might be one of those bugs that changes colors to camouflage itself. I'm certain these things are not local to Brooklyn. Why are they following me? How is it that I have never in my life seen a Praying Mantis and now I see two in a weeks time? I'm scared. Praying Mantis outside my loft. My friend Kendra say they are a good Omen. So I'm buying a lottery ticket tonight. But I am not going to be able to sleep at night knowing this thing is after me. XOXO, Jocelyn August 29, 2008 11:15 AM CommentsIs she wearing braces? You should move. Posted by: Jill at August 29, 2008 02:33 PM Oh God. Maybe I should call the police? Posted by: Jocelyn at August 29, 2008 02:57 PM they are very much considerd good luck Posted by: cupcakes at August 29, 2008 04:43 PM Sweetie, did you totally forget growing up in Connecticut?? The city has brainwashed you! Anyway, enjoy the good luck! Posted by: M at August 29, 2008 05:43 PM What? I never saw a bug like this in CT. Or wait, maybe I did and it was such a traumatizing experience that I do not remember it and then I left town and moved to NY? An obvious sign of post traumatic stress disorder. This can explain away years of bad behavior throughout my 20's. Posted by: jocelyn at August 29, 2008 05:57 PM That is so cool in such a weird way. It's gotta be good luck. I want a close-up of the bangs! What happen to the caterpillar? Posted by: Gertie at August 29, 2008 06:07 PM I have not seen the caterpillar since last Sunday! I think that the Praying Mantis killed it! Probably to beef up before taking advantage of me and then biting my head off. Posted by: jocelyn at August 29, 2008 06:24 PM I've left a few females disappointed after mating, but never so badly that they rip my head off and eat it. Posted by: KU Steve at August 29, 2008 09:36 PM ooooh...I use to hate the way those things looked until I learned that they kill all the bugs that mess with your plants. Though, disturbingly, someone brought one to school in grade school along with another bug in one of those insect carriers. The teacher thought it would be great for us to "view nature" in the classroom for our science lesson. View it we did. We watched the Praying Mantis devour the other bug. Fun times for a fourth grader. By the way don't step on it. Ever. Very EWWW! Posted by: Jenifer at August 29, 2008 10:35 PM KU Steve: Really? I bet at least one. Posted by: Jill at August 29, 2008 11:24 PM I've heard they're good omens too! I've only seen one in my life & every time I see photos of them I'm absolutely fascinated. Posted by: Ari (Baking and Books) at August 30, 2008 11:53 AM Uh, oh. I thought the first pic was so pretty I turned it into my desktop background. Then y'all are all..."gross"? Take a sec...really look, the colors, the lines, the grace...she beautiful! Try to think of insects as Mother Nature's attempt at functional art :) Posted by: Alyxherself at August 30, 2008 01:56 PM I HAVE OFTEN SEEN THE MANTIS. THEY LOOK FANTASTIC . DID YOU KNOW THEY FLY?
