I'm almost finished remodelling my kitchen at the BDL. A project I've been working on the last couple of months on a trade. I did windows for Kendra & Tim and Tim ripped out and installed new cabinets in my kitchen.

Just need to get rid of the counter top and cabinet under the sink, but this won't happen until the fall:

There are some shelves that are going to go up between these two cabinets in the next couple of weeks and then this section will be done:

Then I can focus on this sad state of affairs. My closet. I bought it on Craigslist when I first moved into the loft and I had no closets, there weren't even any walls! It was only $20 and was supposed to be temporary until I found something better. Well it's been six years and being a complete clothes horse you can imagine how much of a nightmare this is for me. Most of my clothes are stored in plastic crates in our attic space above the bathroom. Everyone says "IKEA" but to get something functional for me it would cost over a thousand dollars. And lets be honest a closet system from Ikea is only one step up from a well designed cardboard box. Other than having some sort of custom woodmaker come in and build something, WHERE can I get some inexpensive, but well designed free standing closets? HELP!!!
Closet mess
(I love all of the Bergdorf bags falling out on the closet! Ha!)

And finally here is my Elizabeth Bick portrait. Hung on a mirror showing the exact reflection of the corner of the room it is facing. Love it!

Ok, any closet suggestions would be appreciated!

XOXO,

Jocelyn
PS: OMFG how amazing was Gossip Girl on Monday night? Best episode EVER!

The kitchen is looking great! The mirror is beautiful! The closet? Uh oh. I really can't think of any place other than Ikea. Sorry.

I just wanna know where you got those kick ass kitchen cabinets!
and Joc...a frame built out of 2x4 and some drywall and you have yourself a closet, any size, shape dimension you want...cheap. email me if you want any other input...have done it more than once in these old florida houses. Guess no one had closets back in the day...oh, yeah, something cool...ya know those snap together closet organizer rack-shelve-dual pole technology thingies? you can build the closet around the dimensions of those so...whatchoo think about that?

Hmm... closets. Alyxherself has a good suggestion, but those walls can't support any weight, so I'm not sure if it would work. If you were here, I would say that we should run out to some of the AMAZING used furniture places and we could get you a very well made, gorgeous armoire.

I think you should hire a hot guy from Ready Set to come up with a solution and make him build it in his wearing nothing but a little pair of manties... oh wait, you're an engaged lady now and can't be involved in such immature behavior. Too bad.

M: Thank you! I love it. If I end up caving and going to Ikea, I will call YOU. We can go together. Fun.

Alyxherself: Actually those kitchen cabinets ARE from Ikea. And yes the frames are one step up from a cardboard box, but whatever. They are functional and they were super cheap.
And as far as building a closet? You are speaking about a girl who comes from a long line of cute blonde girls who cannot even put a nail in the wall without the whole thing crashing down. 2 x 4's? Dimensions? dual pole? Oy!

Jill: Ugh, I would love a gorgeous armoire. Two actually.
Ready Set? Mmmmm, maybe I could get D a job there and then HE could build the closets. OMG I almost slid right off my chair thinking about being engaged to a Ready Set boy. I'm calling Stinky Kyle to find out if there are openings RIGHT NOW!

I don't want to sound like a closeted (get it?) Martha fan, but the container store has a really kickass modular closet organization dealy. It has some stupid faux european name that I can't even remember. Nicer than ikea. Just remember who saved Deb's white suede couch from the wine stains of doom? You can trust my domestic advice, which makes NO SENSE AT ALL.

Oh I trust it. You've always had an eye for style. Must be that architecture background. Thanks! Going to their website....now!

You better be careful with the Container Store -- Knuckes's cousin manages/owns it and didn't give her a discount. She made me pledge to join her in a boycott. The only answer is to move to Arizona and have beautiful armoires.

Posted by: Jill at May 7, 2008 05:25 PM

No discount? For Knuckles? That's fucking bullshit!

And a cold winter day in NYC with NO closets is still better than a house in Phoenix with a closet the size of my loft. Nice try. Ha!

They do have amazing closet organizers at the Container Store IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A CLOSET! Which I don't. But it did inspire me to turn Alisters room (formally Jills room) into a huge walk-in closet after he moves out, and then one of those Container Store closet organizers would be The Shizz!

Posted by: Jocelyn at May 7, 2008 09:19 PM

Oh and D would like me to add that my super huge walk-in closet will also double as a weight room. Uhhh, can't he just go to my super fancy gay health club/gym like a normal New Yorker?

Posted by: Jocelyn at May 7, 2008 09:22 PM

Joc! I would never assume you would build it yourself! heavens, girl, I just design, I do not build.
However, I did see a comment about the walls holding the weight, and that is not the case...you build the frame (cube) and then attach it to the studs. Then simply drywall interior and exterior. Dual pole technology was a joke, I meant like the closet poles that hang one above the other. In anycase, you would definately need someone to build it for you, its just an inexpensive way to make the closet look as if it has always been there. It becomes a seamless addition to the room.

Posted by: Alyxherself at May 8, 2008 12:18 PM

Mmmmmm. Maybe. That would still require someone to build and put together and a trip to Home Depot and then I would need a car to lug the stuff back. I was hoping for something that delivered. Mmmmm. We'll see.
Thanks for a the suggestions!

You should have Stinky's friend who made that gorgeous thing for Steve and Gail build you something small for your space. It would be SO gorgeous.

Hey Joc,
Don't know if you already got a closet or not, but there are hundreds of furniture stores in my neighborhood. Some of them may even accept designs. And they're cheap and you can get good quality. They deliver for free in Astoria, but I think they would charge you to Brooklyn. Oooh, and you can come to my place first, we'll have empanadas, and I'll go closet shopping with you if you want.
Cheers on the engagement! When is he coming to NY?
