March 05, 2008

So I went to Terminal 5 to see the Beastie Boys with Debbie & Alex. I was most excited about the fact that Terminal 5 is a pretty small venue. The last time I saw the Beastie Boys was at The Forum in LA, which is the equivalent of Madison Square Garden. It was a great show, but last nights show was AMAZING. I was so happy when they opened with Root Down, And here is the rest of the set list:

Root Down
Flute Loop
Sure Shot
Shake Your Rump
Time For Living
Remote Control
Ricky's Theme
B For My Name
Egg Raid
Triple Trouble
Pass the Mic
Body Movin'
Rhyming & Stealin
Off the Grid
Tough Guy
Lighten Up
Mark on the Bus
Sabrosa
Super Disco Breakin
3 MC's
Ch-Check it Out
So Whatcha Want
Intergalactic
Heart Attack
Sabotage

The trouble started when I took out my camera and my "professional" lens. Actually it wasn't even my lens, it was Debbie's. I had borrowed her wide-angle lens in the hopes of getting some remarkable photos. After taking a couple of practice shots, trying to figure out the best setting for this new lens, I saw the security guys pointing at me. Bam, they came through the crowd and dragged me out and forced me to check the camera. UGH, I was SOOOO pissed, first by being manhandled by a burly security guard, and second because I hadn't even gotten a good shot yet, and third because I was extremely uncomfortable about checking my brand new $1300 fucking camera with a bunch of morons working at Terminal 5.
Anyway back to the show, heads are exploding, I am SO HAPPY I could die. Alex is beaming, Debbie is dancing...did you SEE the set list? Oh God things couldn't have been better. Debbie got spotted in the crowd by one of her readers because she is SO famous. So famous that I want to buy her THIS! After the BB's played their last song and went off stage, I knew there would be an encore. So I went upstairs to the coat check and retrieved my camera with the hopes of getting a few good shots at the end. So I sneak into the crowd and start taking pics, which is next to impossible because the entire crowd is going CRAZY. Then before I knew it, BAM! That burly security guard grabbed me by the underneath of my arm and dragged me out. Him and another meathead demanded my ($150) memory card. When I refused they threatened to call the cops on me. That is where I got a little belligerent and told them to "Go Ahead. Actually PLEASE call the cops on me". I begged them and then they dragged me outside, TOOK my picture and then told me I was banned for life. AH AHA HA HA HA
The only really sad part of this story is that I missed Sabotage, but at least I could hear it from the curb.

Mix a little bit of this:
Jocelyn

With a little bit of that:
Alex

Debbie

Some of this:

You can barely make out Mike D's jew-fro. I told Alex to grow one. So Hot:

Ok, sorry That my pics are so dismal but the story is as always completely ridiculous!

I feel like Marie Barone. Who are these guys that think they can manhandle my daughter? Give me their names! (I'll sic Grandma on them!) You know, the famous "I think I know your mother" routine. haha

Posted by: M at March 5, 2008 02:01 PM

Yes, I had to Wikipedia "Marie Barone"....
Anywhoo, Terminal 5 is on 56th Street & 11th Aveune. Please PLEASE feel free to send Grandma there to police them. And yes, I will bring my camera!! There would be nothing more satisfying than watching Grandma humiliate those meatheads!

So, do you mean that people who work in a coat check are morons, or specifically the Terminal 5 coat check people are morons. It actually sounds like you are a moron (based on your writing). Giving people a hard time for doing their job is really uncool. The band (The Beastie Boys) don't want people to take professional pictures of them for free... blame them, not the security guards who were just doing their jobs. It's people like you that make the concert experience more annoying for everyone.

Posted by: Joe at March 5, 2008 03:28 PM

Just the Terminal 5 morons. The venue experience on a whole was unpleasant. Worst place to see a show in NY, the bouncers, the sound system, the camera police (seriously, I have never in my life been attacked for taking pics. Don't blame the Beastie Boys, please) And I've been doing some research and I am not the only person that thinks T5 sucks. The reviews for this venue are horrible. So I wear my "banned for life" badge with a lot of pride. Thanks!

Posted by: jocelyn at March 5, 2008 03:36 PM

"Manhandling" girls like Jocelyn is uncool. Just what every one attending a concert hopes for. Being pushed around by some steriod junky bouncer out on parole.

Posted by: Michael at March 5, 2008 04:12 PM

Well that's what you get if you try to get away with something illegal that you have explicitly been told NOT to do.
I was at the Beastie Boys show and found it to be a great experience all around. It sounded great, looked great, and I even checked my coat with no problems. I thought the coat check people were very nice and did not seem like morons at all.
And, once again, as far as the "camera police", they are doing their job. Like I said, blame the band if you don't like it. Not the people who are working their ass off to do the best they can at enforcing the rules that they have been given the responsibility of enforcing.
You were obviously trying to get away with something that you knew you shouldn't be doing. It's really immature to blame everyone but yourself for this.
If you think Terminal 5 is the worst place in NY to see a show... you've proven my point about you being a moron.

Posted by: joe at March 5, 2008 06:59 PM

Well I think since I go to shows all the time and you just ENFORCE the rules at one venue (I am just going with the fact that you are probably the bouncer that manhandled me last night) I would be the better judge of what venues are good, and what venues are bad.

Posted by: jocelyn at March 5, 2008 08:22 PM

Contrary to what you consider a "fact", I can assure you... I am no bouncer.
I can also guarantee you that it would be impossible for you to have been to more venues than I have.
I'm just a dude who was looking for reviews of last night's show and came across your page.

Posted by: Joe at March 5, 2008 08:58 PM

i saw them in L.A. and they sooo surprised me by how great they were. nuthin but hits baby

Posted by: paulie at March 5, 2008 09:55 PM

well i say bouncers are morons. blindly following orders. why are they afraid of cameras. are they afraid the picture will steal they're soul. anyway there is a polite way to handle it. bouncers and cops always start on the defensive, aggressive side. i happen to know that joc could never hurt anybody and would have been cooperative if she was approached with manners. with the enormous price of tickets these days they should never kick a nonviolent person out of a venue. there are hundreds of better ways to handle it.

Posted by: paulie at March 5, 2008 10:32 PM

How can you judge impossible? You don't know. And "Joe" you don't know what it is like to manhandled, maybe you manhandle women all the time? Who knows. My arm is still sore...after nearly being ripped out of its socket. I even had it treated by my acupuncturist today. And to date....in all of the MANY shows at MANY venues, have I EVER been in trouble for taking pictures for my own personal use, or for any reason. Only at Terminal 5. I happen to know the BB's recording engineer, personally, so I will find out if what you say is true. But I find it highly unlikely that the Beastie Boys would approve of the events of last night, and how Terminal 5 treated one of their biggest fans.

A note to Joe

Everyone who reads this site is friends with Jocelyn, so all of us now think you are an asshole. God. Every once in a while some knucklehead finds this site and tries to attack our friend. What was the search that led you to this blog--"Beastie Boys concert pictures?" Is that what you were hoping to find? And then you leave a comment flaming our friend for trying to take the very pictures you were hoping to find? You are such a hypocrite. Go stick your thumb up your butt.

Posted by: Molly at March 6, 2008 02:30 AM

Oh and also, Joe is an authoritarian/fascist. "That's what you get" (i.e., being manhandled) "for doing something illegal" (note: this is not even illegal, just prohibited by the venue or band) "that you have been told not to do."

OK, so by the same token, everyone who breaks any minor/stupid rule anywhere should expect to be handled roughly, treated like a criminal or even physically hurt. Great. This mentality is what leads to cops shooting 50 bulletholes in some poor old lady just because she fails to put her hands up when they scream at her...

We don't like people like you, Joe, so go somewhere else and post your meathead rants...why don't you look for some neo-Nazi site or a Rush Limbaugh fan club...

Posted by: Molly at March 6, 2008 02:59 AM

Frankly, Joe, I'm with you. Why should anyone be able to take pictures of the Beastie Boys? That's just plain silly. They need to protect their image - it would be AWFUL if it fell into the wrong hands. Clearly, Jocelyn needs to be brought into immediate compliance, roughly if necessary. Your doing your job man, and don't take any flack from these silly chicks. These are the kind of people who are against the Iraq War and think 9/11 was an inside job - so a little arm-twisting is completely called for!

McCain 2008!

Who wants to bet that "Joe" idolizes cops but couldn't pass the test to get into the police academy so he works as a mall security rent-a-cop in NJ? When you wonder who the 25% that still approves of the job Bush is doing is, you need look no further.

I heard that Joe kicks puppies. I think that's funny and cool. - Amelia

Posted by: Amelia at March 6, 2008 10:20 AM

AH AHA HAhahaha, I love you guys/gals.

Alexis: Actually the one thing I can confirm about Joe is that YES in fact he does live in New Jersey. My sitemeter has a nifty way of tracking who's reading, commenting and where in the world they are.

Posted by: Jocelyn at March 6, 2008 10:41 AM

If the venue does not want photos, that should be respected, but everyone there had camera phones, so why weren't those confiscated too?

Posted by: Mixmaster at March 6, 2008 10:57 AM

Camera phones, point & shoot cameras, small video cameras....I saw everything. But my lens seemed to cause violence amoung burly men, and a small 120 lb girl is who they took out their aggravation on. I stand by my story that the bouncers at Terminal 5 are morons.

Posted by: Jocelyn at March 6, 2008 11:26 AM

That show was ridiculous. There were about 100 people with their tiny point-and-click cameras in the air the whole time not even trying to hide them, (not to mention so much, er, smoke I got the munchies just by standing there) but every time Joc so much as took one quick picture, this guy would dive in after her. He was such a smug bastard. I mean, if he wanted your number, he could have just asked.

i'm so entertained right now

Posted by: paul at March 6, 2008 03:26 PM

Ha - Paulie LOL - me too! Go Jocelyn :))

Hi Jill! We miss you...you should start your own blog from Arizona (I think?) I would totally read!

Whoa. Sitemeter. Pretty technosavvy I say. Joe never stood a chance.
In my experience, EVERYONE who is into BB, since the freaking 80's? is compliance oriented. I know I am.
