Dove Cocktails with Deb!

IMG_0688.JPG

Whenever I go over to Jocelyn's, or heck, anyone's place, I use it as an excuse to bake something and foist at least some of the caloric heft on my skinny friends. However, my Cooking Kavorkah was way off this weekend, from dropping and breaking my friend's birthday cake to miserably failing at the two items I was to bring to Joc's Oscars Party: Orange-Almond Biscotti and Butterscotch Pudding (both were second attempts; I have now retired from trying new recipes, thankyourverymuch).

How to save my spirits? Like you even have to ask: Cocktails! I was watching this new show on the Food Network hosted by someone who, although she definitely looks and sounds Latin, Alex wants to know how she got the uber-German name, Ingrid Hoffman. Alas, this Night Out article in the Times was little help in decoding this, but did leave me distinctly underwhelmed. (A toast: "May we not be chunky chicas!")

Of course, this is about her cooking which, without fail, always makes me hungry. In the episode we caught last week, "Ingrid pays homage to one of Mexico's queen cities, Puebla, as she prepares a traditional Mexican Corn Soup and Mexican Pulled Pork. To toast Puebla, Ingrid makes a Dove Cocktail, sweet with tropical juices and spiked with tequila." I was a little confused as to how pomegranate juice was either "sweet" or "tropical" but I still could not resist its tractor beam: there was lime, there was white tequila and there was a slash of something fizzy, pretty much everything I want from a perfect cocktail. Oh, and it was a really pretty red color.

The results? I don't remember. Which of course means: Awesome. But really, I found the pomegranate flavor to be a bit strong, and might dial it back to 1/2 or 3/4 cup the next time, but otherwise highly recommend it. Heck, I recommend two or four.

Cheers! May we all be drunky chicas!

Dove Cocktail, a.k.a. Pomegranate Margaritas
Adapted from Ingrid Hoffman

Lime wedge, for riming glasses, plus more for garnish
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup white tequila
1/2 cup orange liqueur
1 cup pomegranate juice
2 limes, juiced
1 lime
Splash club, orange, or grapefruit soda (depending on desired sweetness)
Pomegranate seeds, optional

Rim 4 tall Collins-type glasses with lime wedge and then dip in sugar. Fill glasses with ice cubes.
In a large measuring cup combine tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and pomegranate juice. Divide cocktail between the 4 glasses. Top with soda and garnish with lime wedges and pomegranate seeds, if desired.

I didn't attend this party because I was out supporting libertarian political causes, firing automatic weapons and squatting in forclosed homes in Arizona. Had I been in attendance, you can bet that the "cup" of white tequila would have been more like a "liter". Especially with the way the Oscars went this year. The metric system is where it's at. Nonetheless, I approve of this cocktail recipe as a certified mixologist. Perhaps one day I will unveil the recipe to my "Stealth Bomber" punch that has lubricated parties from coast-to-coast. Viva los Borrachos del BDL!

Hell yeah! They were good. Monday kind of sucked though. Thanks Debbie!

Tim, your Stealth Bomber punch will hopefully makes it's debut at the next BDL party. Which I believe is in April!

Thanks! I got them in Mexico...of course!

I know how you feel. I made a very labor intensive risotto tonight that was too rich and was expensive to make. Have you ever tried peeling an acorn squash--one of the ingredients (this ought to be banned). Anyway, I don't have the ingredients to make that yummy looking drink but I just got Girl Scout cookies delivered five minutes ago...so gotta run.
